Notes on the Van Hoesen shape by George Sakakeeny:

       When using the Van Hoesen shape one must use the bottom part of the shaped cane to get the intended shape. In other words the butt ends of the cane are NOT trimmed, instead more of the tip is trimmed when cutting the reed to length (54mm total length). If one used the top part of the SVH shape the tip would be wider than the intended design, the throat would be in the wrong place, and the butt ends would be too narrow. For this shape the optimal location for the collar is 27mm from the butt end, and the first wire is placed at 25mm from the butt end.
